Church Library Ministry - “Go Bananas For Books”
By Summer Roberson
August 2009
The Church Library Ministry Conference, scheduled for October 9-10, will be held at Webster Conference Center in Salina, Kansas. The conference is designed to equip and encourage those involved in the ministry of church libraries. Classes will be offered to train workers just beginning a church library as well as to challenge those who have been involved in the ministry of church library for many years. This year’s theme is “Go Bananas for Books.”
Conference leaders are Morlee Maynard, National Church Library Ministry Specialist, LifeWay Christian Resources; Eva Nell Hunter, Alabama Association/State Convention Consultant; and Bill Jones, CEO/President of Book Systems, Inc.
It is an honor to have Morlee Maynard attending this year’s conference and to recognize her many years as the leader of church library ministry at LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville, Tennessee. She will be teaching new classes that include “Disciple Making Through Church Libraries” and “Church Library Ministry for Today’s Church.” In addition to her church library ministry responsibilities she will be leading the Singles Labor Day Adventure at Ridgecrest this summer. She also serves as the editor of the BACE eJournal, a newsletter for the Baptist Association of Christian Educators. Morlee is an adult Sunday School teacher and leader of the Mobilization Team at her church, Forest Hills Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee. She is married to Ken and they have one grown son, Jonathan.
Other special plans included during the conference will be a book signing with Christian fiction author Judith McCoy Miller on Friday, October 9, 2009. Judith will be one of Friday evening’s featured speakers. It will be a memorable night as Morlee speaks to the hearts of church librarians and Judith shares what makes writing Christian fiction so valuable.
Writing Christian fiction is Judith’s second career. For many years she worked as a legal assistant in law firms and later worked in government law offices. In 2006 Judy retired from full-time legal work to full-time writing—a vocation she considers both a ministry and a blessing from the Lord. She has authored or co-authored approximately twenty-five books since she began writing in 1996, including In the Company of Secrets, Whispers Along the Rails, and A Daughter’s Inheritance. Her newest releases, A Surrendered Heart and The Carousel Painter, will be available in August and September 2009 respectively.
“God’s design on the lives of His people never ceases to amaze me,” says Judith. “Because I am eternally grateful for my own forgiveness and salvation, I strive to share God’s desire to pull us from the mire of sin and set us free to live exciting lives for Him.”
The cost to attend the conference is $40 per person (includes dormitory lodging at WCC, meals while at the conference, and wireless internet access). Six motel rooms are also available at WCC on a first-come, first-served basis. Hotel rooms are an additional cost of $39.00 per room.) Registration Deadline: October 1, 2009.
