Delores Hanneman To Lead Bible Drill Program
By Ken James
May 2007
Delores Hanneman of Olathe, KS has accepted the position of KNCSB Coordinator for the Children’s Bible Drill/Youth Bible Drill/Youth Speakers Tournament. Ken James, Discipleship Training Director for KNCSB, made that announcement at the Annual State-wide Children’s Bible Drill/Youth Bible Drill/Speakers Tournament, Saturday, April 21, at Webster Conference Center, Salina, KS. Delores has a true heart for Bible Drill. With her enthusiasm and years of experience with Bible drills, she will bring a new dimension to this important program.
Bible drills and the speaker’s tournament are wonderful ways to encourage children and youth to memorize scripture that will impact them throughout their lives. It provides a Biblical foundation that will continue to be built upon.
Several churches have inquired as to what they could do to encourage children to be active in Bible drills.
Delores, who, for 20 years, conducted Bible drills in her home church, has this to say “...people ask me, ‘How do you do it?’ meaning how do we keep getting kids involved year after year. I don’t really know the answer except that God is in it and it helps to have creative leaders and to get the parents excited about Bible Drill.”
Delores offers the following to assist and encourage churches to be involved in Bible drills:
- Parent Excitement: I believe our group started growing several years ago when one of my creative leaders took several drillers from the previous year into adult Sunday School classes several weeks before Bible Drill was to start in September and did a few calls in a demonstration drill. We even gained another leader that way—she got so excited about the program that she wanted to be a part of it!
- Plenty of Time: When I was leading Children’s Bible Drill, we used Wednesday nights from September through mid-May, using the same time frame as AWANA from 6:15 – 8:00 PM so that we had time to do some fun learning games, have a lesson, and have time to drill. (At the end, after the competitions were over, we did more fun games that used what they had learned and often had some discussions and expanded lesson time on several of the verses or key passages that made the passage more relevant.)
- Incentives: We gave the children plenty of opportunities to earn points toward an immediate goal (candy bar or can of pop at the end of each month) and toward a future goal (tokens for the Chuck E. Cheese end-of-the-year party). They received points for bringing their Bibles, for attending Sunday School the Sunday before, for wearing their Bible Drill t-shirt, for reciting their verse or key passage, for saying the books of the Bible, and for scoring well on practice drills.
- Creative Leaders: I have been especially blessed with creative and excited leaders. One of them came up with creative games like Jeopardy that included categories such as “Bible Books,” “References,” “Key Words,” “Key Passages,” “Lesson for Today,” etc. Because our group was large, we divided into teams. For smaller groups, individuals can compete with each other. Another leader found unique ways to remember verses like word associations or a rap or song and had the kids make note cards with verses on them to carry with them for review when they were in the car or had a few free minutes.
As her schedule allows, Delores will be available to come to your church to provide training and help with promotion of Bible Drills. KNCSB will provide for all of her expenses.
