Disaster Relief Update

July 2008

Eastern Nebraska Storm
Eastern Nebraska Southern Baptists quickly came to the aid of people hit by a major thunderstorm on Friday, June 27. Cleanup is expected to take weeks following the storm that had wind gusts topping 100 miles per hour.

The “yellow shirts” are making news as they cut up trees downed by the storm. Read the story on the WOWT Channel 6 Web site at http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/22699184.html

Midwest floods
Kansas-Nebraska Southern Baptists are responding in a limited fashion to the flooding in central Iowa and the Mississippi River region.

Two KNCSB disaster relief leaders served as “white hats,” or site commanders, in two different areas of Iowa. Larry Thomas, head of KNCSB disaster relief, served in Wapello. Bill Riley of Derby, Kan., worked in Des Moines.

A five-member KNCSB feeding team arrived in Wapello on Thursday, July 3. The team prepared more than 2,100 meals with the assistance of 27 local volunteers. Team members were essential in setting up a smooth feeding transition for the community and for the feeding team that replaced them.

Eastern Nebraska Baptist Association’s disaster-relief laundry- and shower units were deployed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in mid-July.

New Orleans
Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged the Gulf Coast nearly three years ago, is now a distant memory. However, vast needs still exist in that area.

The Arkansas Baptist State Convention, KNCSB’s partner convention, is continuing to rebuild in New Orleans. Gentilly Baptist Church, on north Franklin Avenue, is the operations base.
Teams are now being booked for the fall and on a limited basis in 2009.
