Disaster Relief Update

September 2011

(This article includes information from the North American Mission Board.)

The KNCSB Disaster Relief Team has been serving for nearly two months in Minot, N.D., in the aftermath of flooding there. Volunteers from Arkansas are providing assistance.

In early July, the disaster-relief shower units from Northeast Association in Nebraska and Heart of Kansas Association were sent to Minot. The laundry unit from Eastern Nebraska Baptist Association also was deployed.

The main KNCSB disaster-relief feeding unit was activated in mid-July. It began operation in Minot with lunch on Saturday, July 16.

As The Digest was going to press in July, the KNCSB feeding unit was scheduled to serve in Minot until early October. More volunteers are needed.

New volunteers are encouraged to sign up, and training will be provided.

The Illinois Assessment team visited a damaged home and came face to face with some good old-fashioned Midwestern resilience in a young mother.

Bob Hill reported, “The homeowner was a young single mother with two little girls. She met them at the door with a big smile and said, ‘Come right on in!’ Once they were inside her ruined living room, she smilingly told them, ‘If I had known you were coming, I would have cleaned up a little in here!” What a great positive attitude in the midst of serious loss!”

Tornado in Reading, Kan.

The small community of Reading, Kan., is rebuilding after the May 21 tornado.

First Baptist Church in Reading is exploring options for repairing the roof and windows. The tornado damaged the sanctuary air-conditioner, and the repairman fixed it at no charge. This allowed worship services to be held in the sanctuary again after several weeks of meeting in the fellowship hall.

Southern Baptist churches and churches of other denominations have sent money to help the church. As just one example, First Baptist Church, Grandview, Mo., sent its Vacation Bible School offering of $475.42.

The Reading church will use some of the donated money for building repairs. The rest of the money has been put into a fund to help local residents affected by the tornado.

Church members Bill and Paula Paige lost their home in the tornado. They have found another modular home and hope to have it in place sometime this fall.
