First Southern, Topeka, Kansas, To Host Second Annual Men’s Conference

March 2007

TOPEKA, KS-On May 4 & 5, 2007, First Southern Baptist Church of Topeka, 1912 SW Gage Blvd., will host its 2nd annual Men’s Conference. Last year’s conference, based around the theme of Spiritual Fitness, blessed the men in attendance with excellent speakers, music, food and Christian fellowship. This year’s conference, “VICTORY!” promises to be bigger and better.

As fathers, husbands, leaders in our church and community, we are challenged daily to run the race that is set before us as Paul tells us in Hebrews 12:1 “let us run with perseverance the race marked before us”.

We have to run the Victory race to overcome spiritual warfare, stress, temptations and all that Satan throws at us daily. God has instructed us through his word that we are to be the spiritual leaders in our homes. Without God’s guidance and direction in our daily walk, we cannot run the race to overcome the hurdles we face as men in today’s world.

On Friday evening, May 4, the conference will begin with a Chuck Wagon BBQ at 5:45pm. The conference will start at 7:00pm with praise & worship, testimonies, speakers and other exciting events.

The opening speaker for the conference will be Pastor Cecil Washington, Co-Founder and Executive Board Member of “Truth In Love Outreach” (TLO), A cross-cultural and denominational effort to uphold Biblical truths in a society drunk with the wine of confusion over right and wrong. He was also the first appointed African American “Minister At Large” for the “Officer’s Christian Fellowship,” an international ministry to high ranking officers in all the branches of military.

Former Congressman, Jim Ryun will be the keynote speaker Friday evening. Jim Ryun achieved national acclaim as a track and field star while a high school student in Wichita, Kansas. In 1965 Jim set the male High School Mile Record of 3:55.3 – a record that stood for 36 years. Jim participated in three summer Olympic Games: 1964, 1968, and 1972, winning a silver medal in the 1500 meter run in 1968. Jim also held the World Record in the mile, 1500 meters and 880 yards.

Congressman Ryun served five terms in the U.S. Congress, representing the Second Congressional District of Kansas. He was a member of the Armed Services, Budget and Financial Services Committees. Jim served as a citizen-statesman, with a commitment to honesty and integrity.

Along with Jim’s running abilities and awards, he has also chosen to run the race God has set before him. Jim’s testimony will inspire and encourage the men who attend the VICTORY! Conference because of his love for God, America and his community.

On Saturday morning, a full breakfast will be served starting at 7:45am. The conference will start at 8:30am with praise & worship, testimonies, speakers and challenges for your life. It will conclude at noon.

Speakers on Saturday morning include Pastor Eric Snell, Phillip Cosby, regional executive director for the National Coalition for the Protection of Families, and Pastor Clark Johnson of First Southern Baptist will conclude the conference.
