Free Booklet Is Available To Help Churches Grow Their Sunday Schools

July 2010

Sunday School is the original small-group experience.

That’s what David Francis says. He is director of Sunday School for LifeWay Christian Resources and a prolific writer. Participants in the recent National Sunday School Directors Seminar in Wichita received a handful of his booklets to take home for further study.

One of these booklets is “The 5-Step Formula for Sunday School Growth.” (Download a free PDF copy at http://www.lifeway.com/lwc/files/lwcF_crd_ss_5stepformula_fullbooklet_pdf.pdf)

“The 5-Step Formula” is based on the principles of Arthur Flake, a renowned Sunday School leader in the early 1900s. In 1909, Flake became a field worker for the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources). Then he moved to Nashville in 1920 and joined the board’s staff.

Flake’s Formula can be summarized as “KEEP” and “GO:”

  • Know your possibilities.
  • Enlarge the organization.
  • Enlist and train workers.
  • Provide the space.
  • GO after the people.

Concerning step 2— “Enlarge the organization,” — Francis writes, “I am convinced that enlarging the preschool is the key to growth in most churches.”

Along with spacious quarters for preschoolers, Francis stresses the need for adequate parking.
