KS-NE Campers On Mission Serve Christ As They Go

July 2010

Kansas-Nebraska Campers on Mission share Christ through a servant lifestyle.
COM members stage a variety of work projects in Kansas and Nebraska. In the winter, many of them minister in warmer climates.
Campers on Mission is sponsored by the Adult Volunteer Mobilization Team of the North American Mission Board. Although it is sponsored by NAMB, Campers on Mission is non-denominational and open to Christian campers of all denominations. Many COM members have an RV rig, but that is not a requirement.

COM rallies
Kansas-Nebraska Campers on Mission hold two rallies each year. The spring rally is traditionally held the first weekend in May at Webster Conference Center, Salina, Kan. A work project at WCC takes place before and/or after the rally.
In 2009 and 2010, the group also worked at the Salina Rescue Mission replacing windows.
The fall rally is traditionally held the last weekend in September at King Solomon Christian Camp, Solomon, Kan. This year’s date is Sept. 24-26. A work project at the camp will be held the week after the rally.
Numerous Kansas-Nebraska COM members also attend the national Campers on Mission rally held each June.

COM work projects
Along with Webster Conference Center and King Solomon Christian Camp, Kansas-Nebraska COM holds work projects in other locations:

  • Alpha Christian Children’s Home, Perry, Kan. — For the past several summers, Kansas-Nebraska COM has staged a work project here. This year’s project is set for July 12-16.
  • Riverside Baptist Church, Independence, Kan. — The group will be working here Aug. 30-Sept. 2.
  • Weir Baptist Camp, Weir, Kan. — Kansas-Nebraska COM has added Weir Baptist Camp to its regular list of work projects. The 2010 project was held in May.

Winter projects
Numerous Kansas-Nebraska COM members serve in warmer climates in the winter. The main location is at Valley Baptist Retreat, Mission, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. Visit the Web site at http://valleybaptistretreat.org/

Valley Baptist Retreat is a staging area for mission groups that serve in the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico.

The retreat offers a free RV site to volunteers in exchange for 20 hours of volunteer work each week.

Kansas-Nebraska COM members arrive there after Christmas and stay for several weeks. They perform a variety of tasks, including maintenance and construction.

Valley Baptist Retreat has an orange-and-grapefruit orchard that helps fund its ministry. Kansas-Nebraska COM men pick fruit and help sell it at the fruit stand at the front gate. Some of the citrus is packaged to sell in other locations as far away as Oklahoma.

Other ministries at Valley Baptist Retreat include:

  • Christmas stocking project: (Read more at http://www.valleybaptistretreat.org/stockings.cfm) — For 20 years, a local woman, Edweina Peroni, and volunteers from across the nation have put together Christmas stockings for children along the Texas-Mexico border and deep into Mexico. Kansas-Nebraska COM women are active in this project. In 2009, more than 17,000 stockings were distributed.
  • Ministry Center — Valley Baptist Retreat has a ministry center that distributes food and clothing to people in need.
  • Sewing Ministry — Kansas-Nebraska COM women team with other volunteers to help make hundreds of quilts. The quilts are distributed throughout the Rio Grande Valley and in Mexico as well as through the Ministry Center.
