Emporia Youth Raise $10,000 For Food Pantry
December 2009
Back in late August, students at 12th Avenue Baptist Church, Emporia, Kan., were challenged to think beyond themselves and consider what they could do to help people in need in Emporia. They selected the Salvation Army food pantry as their ministry project for this year.
Their reasoning behind this project: there are people in Emporia who will likely go without a meal and they want to do their part in making sure this doesn’t happen. Students planned to spend 12 hours outside, sleeping in cardboard boxes, and they acquired pledges for their time spent outdoors.
For the past two months they have asked people in the community to give either monetary or food donations. The purpose of the “homeless night” was not only to raise funds, but also to remind students of the needs of those who are less fortunate.
On Oct. 30-31, 36 students and adults from 12th Avenue Baptist Church braved 30-degree temperatures for a wonderful cause. To date they have raised almost $10,000.
Later this month they will start buying food to help keep the food pantry at the Salvation Army stocked.
Their plan is to make this a long-term ministry, buying food throughout the year and regularly volunteering at the food pantry.
