Name Above Names
December 2009
I love the meaning of a word, especially when it applies to something as precious as the name of a baby. It is always fun to find out why someone has chosen a specific name for their child. It gives insight into the hopes and dreams of the parent for their beloved little one that will carry on the family name. Scripture provides us with some insight into the Father’s will for His Son through His name. The word for “son” comes from the Hebrew word “bane” which means to be the builder of the family name. In Hebrew tradition, the name chosen for a child was descriptive of the parent’s wishes or expectations as the child grew and matured. Do you see how the Father sent His Son to be the builder of the family name? No wonder Jesus said so often, “I am here to do my Father’s business.”
“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). What a sweet gift the Father has given us in the name of His Son—Immanuel—God with us. Where ever His name is proclaimed the Father reveals the longing of His heart to be with us. In the rush of life, we can easily forget the meaning behind His name—enjoying the presence of God.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Father, thank you for the promise of Your Presence through Your Son—Jesus! Thank You for sending Your Son to come and do the family business of preparing a way for all who believe on the Name of Jesus!
Merry CHRISTmas! I’d love to hear from you—face to face—heart to heart.
