Pettiness Versus Purity

June 2010

I sat on the edge of the chair in Room 814 when the faces looking at me made me realize the holiness of the moment. Their faces expressed relief and expectation, O’ good, Tara is here. She will bring us Jesus. Suddenly, an overwhelming thought occurred to me. Last night and this morning, I really battled a bout of pettiness. Seriously, I whined in my heart about something I wanted, but it was not happening fast enough. I almost gasped aloud when I heard quietly in my heart. PETTINESS PREVENTS PURITY! Only purity can draw near to My Holiness. Do you really want to allow pettiness to prevent you from being Jesus to your friend? I knew it was God! The conversation continued in the room as I bowed my heart and solemnly repented of my sin.

Unknown to my friend, her daughter, and precious husband struggling for the breath of life, a holy moment occurred in my heart. Henry Blackaby refers to it as a spiritual marker. One of those defining moments when God meets you face to face and everything stops in such a way that the sights and sounds emblazon upon your heart and minds eye. I inhaled the spirit of God’s goodness and said, “May I pray?” Tears immediately sprung into the mother and daughter’s eyes. Both desperate for a touch of the divine, as their hearts and minds were so weary from a very long week. I prayed silently in my heart, “Father, I am so sorry! Why should I ever allow pettiness to prevent me from being Your vessel? I do not want to be a useless instrument. I want to be a free conduit for Your holiness to flow through. Please keep me mindful daily of the worldly trap of pettiness…” Simultaneously, I prayed aloud, “Father, I praise Your Name for You are Present. You are here. Thank You that Your touch brings healing…”

Beloved, my sin and your sin no matter how small—like a petty thought— hinders our purity. Do we really want to allow pettiness to prevent our holiness? We are called to bring Jesus to those in their time of need and even in their times of rejoicing. What might be separating you and those around you from receiving the touch of His Holiness?
Father, please cleanse me of my petty thoughts. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!
