‘Put The Gospel On Display’ To Reach Young Adults

July 2010

“Look for ways to put the gospel on display” in order to reach young adults.

Bob Mayfield helped Sunday School directors learn how to reach the 18-34 age group more effectively.

Mayfield leads Sunday School work for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. He led a breakout seminar during the recent National Sunday School Directors Seminar in Wichita.

The Oklahoma convention teamed with the research department at LifeWay Christian Resources to study churches in Oklahoma that are effectively reaching young adults. The study looked at eight Southern Baptist churches and eight churches in other denominations.

According to the research, young adults are:

  • Drawn to relationships. Social media, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, play key roles in their lives.
  • Service oriented and want to make a difference in their community and world. “Missions definitely engages this age group,” Mayfield said. Catastrophic events in recent years, such as Hurricane Katrina, proved to be mobilizing points for young adults.
  • Drawn to deeper Bible study, but are repelled by someone preaching at them.
