Raceway Ministries Shares The Love Of Christ At The Kansas Speedway
June 2008
“Something old, something new; something borrowed, something blue…” describes the recent race weekend at the Kansas Speedway, April 24-27.
“Blue” describes the color of volunteer’s skin as they worked in the wind and the rain, especially on Friday as the temperature dropped 19 degrees in a few hours. The rain made it difficult for race fans to get their RVs into their sites. Hundreds of hay bales were made available for fans at their campsites.
“Borrowed” was the outdoor heater used in the Ministry Tent to keep volunteers, fans, and worshipers warm. Sides on the tent kept the wind and water out and the warmth in. Because of Friday’s weather, only one child came for the Hot Wheels Derby. Twenty participated in the Pinewood Derby after the Craftsman Truck race, which featured trucks as well. R.D. Fowler, volunteer from Lincoln, NE, shared the plan of salvation. Sunday morning, after the Praise Band from Haven Church, K.C., KS, R.D. preached to a group of 35.
“New” was an experience for volunteer Floyd Hall, Warrensburg, MO. Through the years, volunteers “get to know” fans they see every race. Floyd was one of the first on the scene to attend to an injured man who had fallen. “I won’t forget the look of relief on his wife’s face when she recognize someone she ‘knew’ when she saw me.” Floyd, a local track chaplain who volunteers at Kansas too, took them to a First Aid Center, stayed with them, and returned them to their car. Relationships are nothing new here, but the opportunity to serve in this way for Floyd was.
“Old” were all the other things done every race weekend by KCARM (Kansas City Alliance Raceway Ministries) volunteers: ADA and tram drivers, Information Booth workers, Ministry Tent workers (including a crew led by Mark Penticuff, Springfield, MO, a local chaplain working the “night shift” taking food and drinks to workers all over the Speedway complex), and Trauma Response.
KCARM is grateful to the Kansas City, Kansas Baptist Association, and the Kansas-Nebraska and Missouri Baptist Conventions for the financial support for this ministry. Please pray for more opportunities to serve. Want to volunteer? Call Linda Kinder, 913-381-2857.
