The Thought Occurred To Me

By Bob Mills

March 2010

This is an unprecedented time in the life of the Southern Baptist Convention. Currently, there are three major SBC agency positions without permanent leadership. Those agencies are the International Mission Board, the North American Mission Board and the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. I want to challenge all Kansas and Nebraska Southern Baptists to pray for the search committees of these three entities. Pray that they will be led by The Spirit to secure God’s man for each of these positions.

Another cause for prayer is to remember the Great Commission Resurgence (GCR) Task Force that will be giving a report at the Executive Committee meeting in Nashville in just a few days.  The GCR has been brought together to examine how we as Southern Baptists can do a more effective job in reaching the world for Christ. Some have suggested that structural changes within SBC organizations are perhaps the key to the future.

The thought occurred to me that the decline or plateau in baptisms, giving, church plants and witnessing are SPIRITUAL issues and not organizational. What Southern Baptists need is a spiritual awakening! We need to fall in love with Jesus all over again. We need to remind ourselves that people without Christ are bound for hell.  We do need to focus on the Great Commission and that, my friend, is a matter of the heart. May our prayer be 2 Chronicles 7:14.
