The Thought Occurred To Me

Our denomination is in the midst of a spiritual wilderness crisis. As Israel wandered for 40 years because of their disobedience, so now we wander because of our disobedience to the Great Commission of our Lord. Jesus commissioned his followers to make disciples of every people group. Have we, as the church and as individuals been obedient to the Great Commission?
Until we can answer that question in the affirmative, all of our important growth indicators will continue to slide. We will continue to scratch our heads and ponder our decline. We may even decide we need a different structure or that we need to give our SBC agencies new assignments. Perhaps we need to unleash and reinvent our North American Mission Board. (GCR)
Probably some tweaking is needed, but the greatest need is for us to repent of our sin of disobedience to the Great Commission. God forgive us for trying to fix our sin ourselves. What if we went to Orlando and had a time of repentance and prayer…it would be a memorable national convention.
I said all of that to say this…the Kansas Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists exists to assist churches in making disciples of people everywhere. If the Great Commission is the purpose of the church, then the mission of the state convention is to assist the church in making disciples. Everything we will do in the future will be directed in one way or the other toward realizing that outcome. In my next Digest article, I will begin addressing each of the delivery components relative to that strategy.
“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man who sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of the summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord—and you forgave the guilt of my sin.” (Psalm 32)
