Water Excercise Offers Spiritual Lessons

I have always loved the water, but on the farm where I grew up, “water opportunities” were few. The cool deep remained a mystery to me until my college days where I finally learned to swim.
Clear and refreshing, water is full of life-giving qualities, varied colors and soothing sounds. At the same time it has a powerful force that must be respected.
A few years ago I discovered a whole new reason to enjoy the water, Aqua Fitness. This immensely enjoyable form of exercise makes creative use of the natural resistance and buoyancy of water to provide a low impact workout that is both fun and effective. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Consistent water workouts can improve muscular endurance and strength, body composition, aerobic capacity, flexibility or joint mobility and balance.
You will discover an interesting comparison as you work in the water. On land, gravity is the downward force to your every move. But in water, buoyancy is the upward force that makes movement much easier. Sounds a little like the Christian walk, doesn’t it?
In the world, Satan and his cohorts are the downward force that hinders our movement and effectiveness. Jesus is the upward force that lifts our spirit, gives us victory and makes life worth living. Psalm 3:3—“But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts my head.”
Let me encourage you to try an exercise class in the water. Check out your local gym, YWCA or city pool. Many hospitals also offer this service to the community.
You don’t need to know how to swim. You don’t have to get your hair wet. You do perspire, but you never feel sweaty. There is no next-day muscle pain, but you will sleep really well that night. You make new friends and it is fun! See you at the pool!
