WCC Board Sees God Work, Despite Money Challenges

June 2010

The Webster Conference Center board of directors in mid-May got to see how God is working despite financial challenges.

Board members learned how the economy is hurting both WCC and the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists.
At WCC, “cash flow is very tight at this point because we’re using some of our cash to build,” Terry McIlvain told the board. McIlvain is WCC administrator and KNCSB director of youth ministry.

Bob Mills, KNCSB executive director, said the economy is hurting KNCSB and the surrounding state conventions.

The board held a special time of prayer for finances at WCC and KNCSB. And they lifted up Jim Lowry, who was forced to resign from the board for health reasons. Lowry is pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Church, St. George, Kan.

But after hearing the bad news about the economy, board members learned how God is raising donors to fund numerous projects. And they voted to begin the ground work on several projects:

  • Remodeling the chapel — This will include installing new windows and carpet along with buying new chairs.
  • Expanding the Dining Hall — tentative plans call for expanding the building on the west side, plus constructing a solarium on the south side.
  • Constructing a building at the WCC RV park that will house showers, restrooms, laundry facilities and a meeting room.
  • The board also received updates on:
  • The 2010 Matching Challenge Grant — As of mid-May, contributions of nearly $25,000 had been given to the $100,000 matching challenge grant. “It is being matched immediately dollar for dollar,” McIlvain said.
  • WCC Elevator Fund — The Elevator Fund is nearing the halfway mark with contributions in mid-May of slightly more than $34,806.
  • Lakefront showers —
  • Summer campers at WCC will discover new showers at the lake. Lakeside Baptist Church in Silver Lake, Kan., paid for and constructed them.
  • Lakeside volleyball court — Volunteers from Ogden Baptist Church, Ogden, Kan., completed the retaining wall for the volleyball court
