When They Come Knocking (Part 2)

In last month’s installment I offered some suggestions as to how to greet the cultists who knock on our doors.  First of all one should be sure that his attitude reflects the spirit of Christ; secondly, don’t argue; and, thirdly, be prepared with some knowledge of their beliefs, and how to use that knowledge to build a bridge of understanding, instead of a wall of separation.  In this article I want to deal with the third suggestion as it relates to Jehovah’s Witnesses.

I offer the following as one example of how a believer can engage a member of the local Kingdom Hall when he/she comes knocking on your door.

The doorbell rings, and Joe answers the door.  “Hello, my name is Jack Clark, and this is Judy Henson.  We are visiting in your neighborhood today sharing the latest issues of our magazines, the Watchtower and Awake.  May we have a few minutes of your time?”

“Hello, my name is Joe Creed, and I am delighted that you have stopped by my house. (Note: This will amaze them, because they seldom hear those words.)  Before you show me your magazines, would you allow me ask you a couple of questions?”

“Of course, you can,” Jack replies, “that’s why we are here.”

“Well, Jack, I understand that you are Jehovah’s Witnesses.  Am I right about that?”

“Yes, we are witnesses of Jehovah and of Jehovah’s organization.”

“Well, Jack and Judy, I have some good news for you, and it is that Jehovah has a witness that He wants to give to you.  Did you know that Jehovah had a witness for you?”

Jack is hesitant as he says, “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“May I borrow your New World Translation?” Joe asks. (Note: It is important to use their Bible, for they are not allowed to read, or trust, another translation.)

Jack hands his bible to Joe.  Joe opens it to 1 John 5.  “Jack, please follow along as I read verses 9-13 of 1 John the fifth chapter.” (Note: Hold the bible so that the JW can follow as you read.)

Joe explains, “Jack, this passage says some very important things to us.  You will notice that it talks about the witness of men, and it says that God’s witness is greater than the witness of men.  It also says that if we don’t believe His witness then we are calling God a liar.  Jack, you wouldn’t want to call Jehovah a liar, would you?”

“Of course I wouldn’t,” Jack responds.

Joe continues, “Jack, it is very important for us to understand just what Jehovah’s witness is to us.  You will notice, in verse 11, it tells us that Jehovah’s witness to us is that He has given to us eternal life, and that life is in His Son, Jesus Christ.  Further, it says, in verse 12, that he who has the Son has life, but he that does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

“Jack and Judy,” Joe adds, “the good news that I spoke of earlier is found in verse 13, and it is that you might know that you have eternal life by accepting Jehovah’s witness to you about His Son.  I have accepted God’s Son in to my life, and now, based on the sure witness of Jehovah to me, I know that I will live forever with Him.”

“Now, Jack, I am familiar with your magazines, and I will accept them if you care to give them to me (Note: I always accept their magazines because it keeps them out of the hands of someone else.)  I am going to pray that you and Judy will give serious consideration to what we have talked about today.  Remember, if you choose not to believe the witness that Jehovah has given about His Son, Jesus Christ, then you are calling Jehovah a liar.  But, if you receive Jesus Christ, you are promised eternal life.”

“I am available if you would like to further explore this teaching,” Joe says, “and I thank you for the privilege I have had to share it with you.”
