Discovering Your Biblical Purpose
March 2006
Change is the defining attribute of our culture. Knowing who we are and why we exist helps us to understand and deal with the nature and direction of change so that we may maximize our abilities, enjoy life, and accomplish personal goals.
For people to experience the “gusto” out of life so often advertised about they need to pursue a purposeful direction that provides meaning and significance to their existence. Our lives are comprised of at least a half dozen or so important roles and dimensions that we intentionally and regularly nurture. Among the most common priorities are family, career, community involvement, leisure, health, and spiritual and intellectual development. We gain a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment from growing in these areas.
So how do we determine if “going for the gusto” constitutes an appropriate direction to pursue? Some of us determine our direction by watching what others do and by mimicking their behavior and choices. Still others gather information, interpret facts, and create paths of action that we hope will result in desired outcomes. Sadly, and all too often, we do whatever seems most natural or that which we have always done, hoping that these non-choices will provide the satisfaction we seek.
A great many of us, however, take cues from our leaders – that is, from individuals who describe a preferable future in which we can participate and add value. That future possibility, known as vision, gives us a sense of a direction to pursue. But does vision help us find purpose, hope, and fulfillment as individuals? Well, possibly on a group level. However, to realize our uniqueness, we need to understand our God given purpose in life.
Living a focused life with kingdom influence begins with a biblical foundation. A guided study of key scriptures can help reveal your reason for existence as an individual. It declares the reason you exist and reflects the heart of God and his perspective. The biblical foundation (purpose) of your life, once identified, is like “true north,” it is the point of reference by which all decisions are measured.

Book Review:
“Can You Hear Me Now?” by Dallas & Nancy Demmitt – An excellent work dealing with the communication skill of listening. Unlike many other “listening” works, the authors begin with an explanation of how to spiritually anchor yourself in Jesus before you attempt to explore the depths of another person’s heart. It is accompanied by an excellent workbook. Both are published by Cook Communication Ministries, Colorado Springs CO.
