In What Shall We Trust?

January 2007

Normally, I don’t get completely frustrated listening to politicians and the secular press. However, this past election season and the rhetoric that has come out of it really has frustrated me. We seem to be completely losing our way as a nation. One thing is certain. As things stand now, being a conservative Christian will be a huge liability in the political process over the next year or two. It is so frustrating to see how far we have departed from the biblical values upon which our nation was founded.

For all of you who are frustrated as I am with what has been happening let me remind you of a reality that transcends our current circumstances. The psalmist had discovered that reality when he wrote, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God (Psalm 20:7 NIV).”

The reality is that we have paid too much attention to secular politics in the church. We have placed too much trust in the political process to return our nation to biblical principles. I appreciate Christians who pay the price to be a part of the political process and I believe that we need to stay engaged. However, it is time to recognize that what we are looking for is not likely to come through the political process.

This should not surprise us. God has given us a pattern for accomplishing His work. It is called the Great Commission. This is not a novel idea. Study church history and you will discover that Christianity declines spiritually when it depends too much on the secular political process whether it be the church-state partnership with Constantine in the fourth century or the present attempt to partner with our political parties.

We need to be about God’s plan. We need to make sure that the Great Commission is at the heart of our church and denominational life. Having said that, let me assure you that KNCSB is fully committed to the fulfillment of the Great Commission. On the last page of this edition of the Digest, you will find a promotion for a very special event coming up in April 2007, “Missions Challenge 2007.” We are encouraging KNCSB churches to participate in this event.

We want you to come, not just to attend another event. We want you to come to refocus all of us on the Great Commission. Come and join us as we challenge ourselves to be more involved in the work of the Kingdom of God.

Isn’t that really where we need to be involved? Shouldn’t we all be “on mission” to bring the Gospel to the lost?
