The Thought Occurred To Me
July 2010
Kansas-Nebraska Baptists are committed to the Great Commission. I think we understand the significance of the mandate to make disciples of all people groups. However, we cannot stop with the understanding of discipleship; we must engage in the activity of disciple making.
The first component in our strategy of making disciples is sharing the gospel with people. Sharing Christ is fundamental to our disciple-making journey. It is the golden thread that runs throughout the entire process of sharing, starting, strengthening and sending.
Recently, many KNCSB churches participated in a nationwide emphasis called, “God’s Plan for Sharing.” Over 180 churches participated in an evangelistic campaign with the message of “Find It Here.” We do not have all of the results in yet, but we know that the message of Christ was presented to thousands of people in our convention.
Jon Sapp and his evangelism team are also planning and executing many other opportunities for sharing Christ. There are many examples of the “Sharing” strategy, some of which are:
- Crossover West Central Nebraska will provide those coming to the KNCSB annual meeting in Lexington an opportunity to prayer walk as well as share a verbal witness for Christ.
- Hispanic fellowship events are designed to reach our fastest growing people groups. We have had thousands of Hispanics attend with many coming to faith and new churches started as a result of these events.
- Six weeks of Super Summer plus one week of Hispanic Super Summer represent an effective means of reaching youth for Christ. Super Summer is designed to speak to the hearts of youth.
- Block parties and the block party trailers represent an ideal way to touch families in communities. Many KNCSB associations have block party trailers that are available for churches to schedule.
- Disaster Relief Ministries offer hope for those in crisis both physically and spiritually.
- Innovative ministries afford countless opportunities to share Christ in unique settings. For example, 9th Inning Ministries has seen over 2,000 professions of faith over the past ten years. Raceway Ministries has touch the lives of hundreds of racing fans.
- Personal evangelism training is offered through the state convention in partnership with KNCSB associations.
In my opinion, the most effective method of evangelism is one believer telling another person about their relationship with Jesus. If one is to be a disciple of Christ, sharing Jesus is not optional. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, if we are to be faithful to the Great Commission, sharing is our priority. Let me recommend a book for your consideration as you make sharing a priority in your life. The Best Kept Secret of Christian Mission by John Dickson is perhaps one of the best books I have seen on evangelism.
